Cancellations Cost Brits £1.2 billion Per Year

New research by an online travel agency in the UK has revealed the top 10 causes of overseas cancellations over the last year, with illness and injury revealed as the most likely reasons for holiday plans to be abandoned...

According to the study, as many as 23 per cent of UK adults have had to cancel overseas holiday bookings that they'd already made and committed to in the last year, with the 10 most common reasons also revealed, including inflexible work commitments, relationship break ups and the death of a pet.

87% claimed to have lost their deposit - an average of £110 and when asked the reasons for the cancellations the answers were as follows:

  • Illness - 12%
  • Injury - 10%
  • Inflexible work commitments - 10%
  • Relationship break up - 9%
  • Death of a pet - 7%
  • Death of a loved one - 6%
  • Unforeseen financial circumstance - 6%
  • Childacare arrangement problems - 4%
  • Phobias - 3%
  • Pregnancy - 2%
The report showed that only 4% had effective cancellation cover on their travel insurance if they had insurance at all.

It is vital that your Travel Insurance is taken out before you book your holiday to ensure that your deposit is not lost, but if you do not have travel insurance in place and you have to cancel your trip the you could lose all the money you have paid out for your trip.

With Insurance cost for a two week trip, it makes no sense to ignore arguably, the most important part of your plans and put your arrangements in the hands of fate...
